Here’s the question: should president Barack Obama have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace?  The answer: No.

“for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”

That’s what the Nobel organization said was the reason our president was awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.  The Nobel people should have asked those in Poland, the Czech Republic and Israel how they feel about that statement.  More on that in a minute.. but, it’s worth exploring the further the cutoff date for nomination for this award.  It was February 1, 2009.  You heard me right, 12 whole days after he took office!
I decided to go back and take a peek at what president actually did in the first 12 days of his term.  Here are some highlights:
January 20, 2009 — Inauguration — Huge Achievement — not worth the prize unless every president should get one for this feat.

January 21, 2009 — signed some executive orders — again, cool and all — but, not worth the prize.  See comments on the January 20th listing.

January 22, 2009 — more executive orders — yawn.. we’ve already talked about why this doesn’t rise to Peace Prize levels.. btw, we’re talking about executive orders like limiting administration staffers’ pay (Czars don’t seem to be included in this), promises of transparency (hehe .. that wasn’t a joke?), and rescinding the Mexico City Policy which prevented taxpayer dollars from being used to fun abortions in other countries.  So, good news there, we’re now helping to abort babies!!  (those of you slow on the uptake.. that’s sarcasm you smell).

January 27, 2009  — Apology to the Muslim world on Al Arabiya TV.  This was his first sit down interview as president.  In it he said among other things, My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy. We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect.”  This was the first of MANY apologies this president has and continues to make for America since he’s been in office.

January 29, 2009 — Signed the Ledbetter Bill into Law.  Hmm.. maybe this is why he was nominated.. This insures equal pay for equal work no matter the gender.  But, I thought we already had laws covering this.  THIS law, however, makes lawsuits available for people who think they’ve been discriminated against no matter how long ago it was.  This law overturns a Supreme Court ruling on the same case.  So president Obama has now made more business for his friends who are lawyers.

That’s about it for activities on the president’s agenda from the time he was inaugurated until the last date he could have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on February 1, 2009.  I don’t see what jumped out at the panel of four women and one man who bestowed him this award.

By the way, the president certainly has made a ton of overtures to world leaders since he’s been on the job.  Here are some of his biggest hits so far:

1. Bowed to the leader of Saudi Arabia and there’s wide belief he kissed his hand or ring but, the camera angle was partially blocked

2. Accepted a book from and posed for a picture with Hugo Chavez of Venezuela

3. Snubbed the president of France when he invited our president to the American Cemetery in Normandy

4. Gave the Queen of England the gift of a video iPod loaded with his speeches on it

5. Gave the Prime Minister of England DVDs in a format that doesn’t work in England

6. Has gone t0 the Middle East and Europe many times since he’s been in office INCLUDING a landmark trip to Egypt for a speech to Muslims but, hasn’t found the time to visit our best friend in the region, Israel.  By the way, it’s a very long way to Israel from Cairo.. 231 miles.  (again, sarcasm)

7. Flip-flopped on a campaign promise to continue the construction of the long range missile defense system in Eastern Europe that would protect our friends there (especially Poland and the Czech Republic) from nuclear threats.  It’s an interesting coincidence that Russia was against that shield.  Hmmm, wonder if he gave in to them.

8. I wonder what the Dalai Lama thinks about the president joining the ranks of winners of the prize.  Good news!!  The Tibetan leader was in Washington last week.  I wonder if they got together to share their experience.  Oh.. that’s right, the president declined to meet with the leader.  Something presidents since George H. W. Bush have done every year.  Why didn’t he meet with this peaceful leader?  Because, he didn’t want to disrespect the Chinese.  That’s communist China.  That’s the country that responds to cries of freedom and liberty by running over it’s own people with tanks.

Wow, I guess I didn’t give this enough thought.  After having listed all of this in easy to read black and white, I was wrong.  The answer to the question of whether president Obama deserved to win the Nobel Peace Prize isn’t “no” as I stated earlier.  It’s HELL NO!

But, what do I know?
