A first-of-its-kind law was signed by Republican Idaho Governor Brad Little which would ban the practice of “abortion trafficking.”

In the newly signed law, it defines “abortion trafficking” as an adult who has the intention “to conceal an abortion from the parents or guardian of a pregnant, unemancipated minor” and also includes “an abortion-inducing drug for the pregnant minor to use for an abortion by recruiting, harboring, or transporting the pregnant minor within this state.”

The bill includes provisions to also allow parents of a minor to sue parties found guilty of providing an abortion to a child and the punishment for violating the law comes with a prison sentence between 2 and 5 years.

According to the testimonial letter provided by Governor Little, the new law doesn’t stop the family of a pregnant minor from seeking an abortion outside the state.

Opponents to the bill include the Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates-West, who have accused the Idaho Governor of ignoring the will of his voters creating “the nation’s first crime of so-called ‘abortion trafficking,’”

In a Tweet from the Planned Parenthood organization, they assert “This legislation is despicable, and we’re going to do everything in our power to stop it.”

According to NBC News, Idaho has banned abortion at any time during pregnancy and has passed numerous laws criminalizing those who helped the pregnant woman obtain an abortion.  13 other states have also completely banned abortion at all stages during a pregnancy.
