NYC Judge Juan Merchan has scheduled sentencing of former President Donald Trump despite clear rulings from the Supreme Court, to begin when early voting in Pennsylvania starts.

In a letter from Trump’s legal team, they asked Judge Merchan to delay sentencing as there is “no basis for continuing to rush” this case and informed the judge that early voting begins only days before the scheduled sentence date of Sept. 18th.  Trump’s attorneys argued that a delay in sentencing would  “reduce, even if not eliminate, issues regarding the integrity of any future proceedings.”

“Setting aside naked election-interference objectives, there is no valid countervailing reason for the Court to keep the current sentencing date on the calendar,” Trump’s legal team wrote in the letter to the judge.

The postponement of the sentencing date is “necessary to allow President Trump adequate time to assess and pursue state and federal appellate options” if the judge rejects Trump’s legal team motion to vacate the jury decision in the case because it directly contradicts the Supreme Court’s ruling in July regarding clear presidential immunity.

Currently, Judge Juan Merchan is reviewing the motion and would have a ruling on Sept. 16th, just two days before the scheduled sentencing.
