Cities that shield illegal immigrants may soon be cut off from federal housing funds, thanks to a bold new bill from Republican lawmakers who are sick of watching U.S. tax dollars reward lawlessness.

Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., and Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., have introduced legislation that would block sanctuary cities—like Los Angeles—from accessing grants through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program.

“Cities that encourage illegal immigration shouldn’t be rewarded with federal housing subsidies,” Hagerty declared. “The Trump administration has made it clear that illegal immigration will not be tolerated anywhere in the United States, and cities that defy American sovereignty will face the consequences.”

Norman doubled down: “It’s simple: if you’re going to ignore federal immigration law, don’t expect to get a dime of federal tax dollars. Sanctuary cities are putting politics over public safety, and that’s unacceptable.”

The proposed bill comes as President Trump’s administration ramps up pressure on rogue cities that thumb their noses at ICE and DHS. His recently proposed budget includes gutting these grant programs entirely—programs that funnel over $3 billion to so-called “urban development.”

Hagerty and Norman’s bill specifically targets cities that block cooperation with federal immigration authorities—those that hide or refuse to report the immigration status of illegal aliens, or outright obstruct DHS detainer requests.

As chaos continues in cities like Los Angeles, where protests over immigration enforcement have turned violent, Republicans say it’s time to pull the plug on the perks. No more money, no more excuses.

The bill aligns with President Trump’s America First agenda and sends a clear message: obey federal immigration law or kiss your taxpayer gravy train goodbye.
