Bruce Springsteen is once again defending his outspoken criticism of President Donald Trump, arguing that confronting America’s flaws is, in his view, the highest form of patriotism. The veteran rocker made the remarks during the recent PBS special Bruce Springsteen: Finding America in Song, where he discussed politics, national identity and his long-held beliefs about civic responsibility.
According to Springsteen, true patriotism is not about overlooking problems but addressing them directly in hopes of creating a stronger nation. “I believe in critical patriotism,” Springsteen said. “I believe that’s the definition of a patriot, you know, that you love your country so much that you are willing to look at it clearly, recognize its faults, encourage it to be a better place, and believe that you carry in your heart the country that is waiting.”
The comments come after months of political messaging from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who has become one of the entertainment world’s most visible critics of President Trump. During his recently completed Land of the Hope and Dreams tour, Springsteen frequently paused between songs to deliver political remarks, blending his performances with commentary aimed at the Trump administration, reports Variety.
At the opening performance of the tour in late March, Springsteen leveled criticism at former Attorney General Pam Bondi, saying, “She prosecutes our president’s perceived enemies, covers up for his misdeeds and protects his powerful friends.” He then turned his attention directly to President Trump, telling the crowd, “You want to talk about snowflakes? We have a president who can’t handle the truth.”
Over the years, Trump has responded to Springsteen’s criticism on multiple occasions, often using his Truth Social platform to push back against the singer’s remarks.
In one of his most widely shared posts, Trump encouraged supporters to boycott Springsteen’s music and concerts while offering a blistering response to the rock icon’s repeated criticism.
“Bad, and very boring singer, Bruce Springsteen, who looks like a dried up prune who has suffered greatly from the work of a really bad plastic surgeon, has long had a horrible and incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, sometimes referred to as TDS,” Trump wrote on social media. “The guy is a total loser who spews hate against a President who won a Landslide Election, including the popular vote, all Seven Swing States, and 86% of the Counties across America.”
