Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's attendance at the Met Gala, for which she reportedly received a luxury ticket, is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee. However, her lawyer had cautioned her about the invitation beforehand, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The sources say that the lawyer warned Ocasio-Cortez that accepting the invitation could potentially raise ethical concerns, and advised her to be cautious. The invitation reportedly came from a group of lobbyists who were interested in discussing policy issues with the congresswoman.
Ocasio-Cortez ultimately decided to attend the event, but did so in a way that she believed was in compliance with House rules. She also used the occasion to make a political statement, wearing a white gown with the words "Tax the Rich" emblazoned in red on the back.
The House Ethics Committee is currently investigating whether the congresswoman violated any rules by accepting the invitation and receiving the ticket, which is valued at around $35,000. However, it is not yet clear what specific rules the committee is examining.
Ocasio-Cortez's spokesperson, Lauren Hitt, said that the congresswoman has been fully transparent with the committee and provided all requested information. Hitt also noted that Ocasio-Cortez has been a vocal advocate for campaign finance reform and has refused donations from corporate PACs, which she believes have undue influence in politics.
