The southern border is entering a new era. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and White House border czar Tom Homan arrived in El Paso, Texas, yesterday - Monday, Feb 4th - to meet with troops stationed along the border, marking a major shift in immigration enforcement. Hegseth made it clear that President Trump’s directive is simple: gain 100% control of the southern border. “Unchecked, we have no idea who they are, where they’re coming from, we have no idea what their intentions are,” Hegseth warned, emphasizing the administration's stance on securing the nation’s borders. He added that after decades of deploying U.S. troops to secure foreign borders, it was time to focus on defending America’s own. As part of this push, Texas National Guard troops have been officially authorized to arrest those who enter the U.S. illegally. The move comes after Governor Greg Abbott and acting U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Pete Flores signed an agreement allowing the Guard to act as federal immigration officers under Border Patrol supervision. Texas has agreed to cover any costs associated with the policy shift. Meanwhile, in San Antonio, the city’s Migrant Resource Center is preparing to shut down, with officials saying it could close as soon as the end of the week. The center was originally established in 2022 when an influx of migrants overwhelmed the city, leading to hundreds sleeping on the streets. While the facility once held as many as 1,200 migrants per day, fewer than 100 remain as of Monday night. In an even more dramatic development, the White House confirmed that the first flight deporting illegal migrants to Guantanamo Bay is now underway. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, "President Trump, Pete Hegseth and Kristi Noem are already delivering on this promise to utilize that capacity at Gitmo for illegal criminals."  The administration ordered the Naval base to be prepared for this purpose last week, marking a significant escalation in immigration enforcement. With these sweeping changes, the message from the administration is clear: the Biden-era border policies are officially over. The federal government is now fully backing state-led enforcement efforts, and Trump’s team is taking aggressive steps to tighten border security like never before.
