In a bold move aligning with the Trump administration's intensified immigration enforcement, Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Alina Habba, has initiated a federal investigation into Democratic Governor Phil Murphy and Attorney General Matt Platkin. The probe centers on New Jersey's 2018 Immigrant Trust Directive, which limits local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Announcing the investigation on Fox News, Habba stated, "I want it to be a warning for everybody that I have instructed my office today to open an investigation into Governor Murphy, to open an investigation into Attorney General Platkin." She emphasized that any obstruction of federal law enforcement efforts would lead to charges of obstruction and concealment.
Governor Murphy defended the state's position, asserting that New Jersey law enforcement focuses on criminal justice and collaborates with federal authorities when necessary. He said, "Law enforcement in New Jersey is obsessed with bringing justice on crimes and against criminals."
Attorney General Platkin highlighted that the directive has been upheld by federal courts, including those with judges appointed by President Trump.
The investigation underscores the ongoing tension between federal and state authorities over immigration policies, particularly in states that have enacted measures to limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. As the situation develops, it raises questions about the balance of power between state sovereignty and federal authority in immigration matters.
