Federal prosecutors say a man armed with a pizza cutter tried—and failed—to impersonate an FBI agent in a strange attempt to free accused murderer Luigi Mangione from his Brooklyn jail cell, the New York Post reports.

Authorities identified the suspect as Mark Anderson, a 36-year-old Minnesota native working at a New York City pizzeria. According to court documents and law enforcement officials, Anderson showed up at the Metropolitan Detention Center around 7 p.m. Wednesday, claiming he had a court order “signed by a judge” to release Mangione, who is being held without bail.

When jail staff asked for identification, Anderson allegedly produced a Minnesota driver’s license and casually mentioned that he was carrying weapons. Officers then checked his bag and discovered two items: a barbecue fork and a metal circular blade resembling a pizza cutter, according to court filings. According to The Post, Anderson was arrested and charged with impersonating an FBI agent after allegedly throwing papers at Bureau of Prisons personnel.

The unusual incident occurred just days before Mangione, 27, was scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court for a pretrial conference in his widely publicized murder case.

Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk on December 4, 2024, during the company’s annual investor conference. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
