A Georgia daycare worker accused of horrifically assaulting a 1-year-old until his face was severely bruised has reportedly been released on bail, according to the New York Post, leading to threats against the judge who allowed the release. Yvette Thurston, 54, was freed on a $44,000 bond after being charged with multiple counts of child abuse and aggravated battery for the incident that occurred at Little Blessings Child Care in Bainbridge. Judge Ann Marie Rose-Emmons, who granted the bond, received death threats from the public, prompting District Attorney Joe Mulholland to condemn any threats toward judiciary members and emphasize the seriousness of both child abuse and threats against court officials.

“Our office will not tolerate abuse of the children in our community, who are entrusted to others for their safety while their parents work to make a living. Likewise, we will not tolerate threats against our judges, who are carrying out their sworn duty under the laws of the State of Georgia,” Mulholland wrote in a statement.

The arrest took place after a family reported their son’s injuries, initially believing another child was responsible. However, surveillance footage allegedly revealed Thurston herself striking the child. Images shared by the boy’s father online showed the toddler with a swollen eye and multiple facial injuries.

“I am aware that the woman that did this is no longer behind bars. Honestly, I was told this would likely happen because that is how our justice system works. Of course my wife and I do not agree with this, but we don’t get to ultimately make that decision. It is important that we all allow the investigators and legal system to thoroughly complete their responsibilities to achieve the result WE ALL WANT,” he wrote on Facebook.

Thurston has reportedly been terminated from her position at the daycare.

Despite their disappointment over the bail decision, the child’s family urged patience, supporting the work of investigators and expressing hope that the justice system will bring a satisfactory resolution. The young boy is reported to be recovering, receiving medical assessments and care.

According to The Post, “Weeks assured that his son is under frequent evaluation and is making a good recovery ‘surrounded with love.’”
