Police in Fairview Heights, Illinois, say what began as a routine traffic stop quickly turned into a bizarre crash and an even stranger confession.
Around 9 a.m. Wednesday, an officer pulled over a vehicle with expired plates on Old Collinsville Road, just south of Frank Scott Parkway. The squad car, fully marked with flashing lights, was parked behind the stopped vehicle as the officer walked up from the passenger side.
That’s when a gray 2018 Chevrolet Camaro suddenly plowed into the back of the police car, the impact so forceful that it shoved the cruiser into the car in front — “impaling them together,” according to authorities.
The driver of the Camaro jumped out and approached the officer, whose body camera was rolling.
“What happened?” the man asked.
“You tell me,” the officer replied.
“I need a new car,” the motorist said.
After being directed to the sidewalk, the man admitted he had been drinking and had taken “weed pills.” He added, “I got insurance, but it ain’t gonna cover that.”
But the real shock came as the officer asked for his license. The driver flatly admitted: “I did that on purpose, sir.”
When asked why, his response was simple: “I’m bored.”
