Ammunition recovered from the rifle believed to have been used in the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk reportedly carried engravings tied to transgender and antifascist messages, reports Newsmax.
Newsmax noted it was unable to independently verify the claims, which were cited from Justice Department emails. Both President Donald Trump and investigators have described the suspect as a “college-age” male. “They have a virtual manhunt out there, so we’ll see what happens, but we hope we get him,” Trump told CNN.
A Justice Department source, speaking to Newsmax on background because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said the information will be released once the administration determines the timing is appropriate. The source emphasized that because the case remains open and the shooter has not been apprehended, details about the alleged engravings or the suspect’s ideology will not be made public for now.
The DOJ also urged reporters to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports, underscoring the sensitive nature of the investigation. “As this is an ongoing investigation, the FBI declines to comment,” the FBI National Press Office said in an emailed statement.
According to The Wall Street Journal, which cited an internal law enforcement bulletin and a source familiar with the case, the weapon was an older-model .30 caliber hunting rifle found in the woods near Utah Valley University. It was wrapped in a towel, with one spent cartridge in the chamber and three remaining rounds in the magazine, each reportedly bearing engravings.
Video evidence shows Kirk, 31, was shot while onstage at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He was engaged in a debate with a student over mass shootings involving transgender individuals at the time. Authorities have not released the student’s identity, and no arrests have been made.
Footage shared online shows Kirk taking audience questions during the event. A man wearing glasses and a gray shirt asked him: “How many transgenders have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?”
“Too many,” Kirk responded.
The man then continued, with part of his question inaudible, but added: “Now five is a lot, I’m going to give you some credit. Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?”
“Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk replied. Moments later, he was shot in the neck.
The FBI and local authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting.
