NBC News anchor Andrea Mitchell faced intense backlash online after attributing significant credit for President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace deal to the Biden administration. The 78-year-old veteran journalist thanked former Secretary of State Antony Blinken on X for his efforts in “creating the basis for the agreement once the two sides were finally prepared to compromise — we hope!” “Thank you for spending two years working toward this moment,” Mitchell wrote Monday in response to a post by Blinken. Blinken, who served as Biden’s top diplomat, had earlier written that Trump’s cease-fire “adopted and built on the plan the Biden Administration developed.” Mitchell’s reply quickly ignited criticism across social media. Commentators accused the longtime NBC correspondent of attempting to rewrite history and diminish Trump’s role in the agreement. “That time Andrea Mitchell thanks Blinken and Biden over [current Secretary of State Marco] Rubio and Trump for the peace deal in Gaza. Just incredible,” journalist Joe Concha posted on X. Another user wrote, “Sad, sad state of journalism. You’re embarrassing yourself, Andrea. Go home.” As of Tuesday afternoon, Mitchell had not responded publicly to the controversy. The New York Post reported that NBC News declined to comment. Trump, who spent recent days traveling through Egypt and Israel for a “Summit for Peace,” formally signed the Gaza cease-fire accord Monday alongside leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. Calling the deal “an end of an age of terror and death,” Trump said the agreement would bring long-awaited relief to civilians on both sides. Former President Bill Clinton also praised Trump, Qatar, and other regional mediators for “keeping everyone engaged until the agreement was reached.” Days later, Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris issued statements regarding the cease-fire. Biden said his administration “worked relentlessly to bring hostages home” and “commended President Trump and his team for their work.” Harris also praised “the President and his team,” though she notably avoided mentioning Trump by name.
