Law enforcement officials in Rhode Island have taken a person of interest into custody following a deadly shooting on the Brown University campus that left at least two people dead and several others injured.
Authorities located the individual at a hotel in Coventry, roughly 17 miles from Providence, after an intensive search. Police have not confirmed whether the person is a Brown University student or has any direct connection to the school, noting that the investigation remains ongoing and details are still being verified.
Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez Jr. said investigators are continuing to gather evidence, conduct interviews, and work closely with prosecutors as they build the case. Officials emphasized that the situation is still fluid and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Following the arrest, shelter-in-place orders for the Brown University campus and surrounding Providence area were lifted. Officials also provided an update on the victims, reporting that several individuals remain hospitalized, with most in stable condition.
Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee offered condolences to the victims and their families, calling the incident a heartbreaking tragedy while praising law enforcement for their swift response.
