Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier, a Democrat, cut short a virtual press call featuring California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democratic leaders after being told she was committing a felony by joining the call from a bathroom inside the state Capitol.
At the time of the call, the Texas House was locked in debate over a redistricting bill backed by President Trump. Collier condemned the legislation, saying it likely violates the Voting Rights Act by “cracking and packing” districts—effectively diluting the voting power of Black and Brown communities.

Approximately 30 minutes into the discussion, Collier suddenly interjected: “Sorry, I have to leave. They said it’s a felony for me to do this.” She explained to someone off-camera that she had been told she was only permitted to be in the bathroom. Collier then attempted to rejoin before abruptly saying, “No, hang on. Bye everybody. I’ve got to go.”
