Over the past two years, New York City has experienced a surge in illegal immigrants reportedly costing the city over $5 billion.
The New York Post reported since the start of fiscal year 2023, NYC has spent $4.88 billion on care for illegal immigrants and could possibly see over $5billion in costs for fiscal year 2024.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams has publicly stated that costs could soar in 2025 with projections showing over $10billion. The Post reported the current expenditures as follows:
- $1.98 billion for housing and rent
- $2 billion for services and supplies
- $500 million for food and medical costs
- $500 million for IT, administrative, and other costs
The NYC Police Department has also incurred numerous expenses relating to the security surrounding migrant housing.
“Even hotels in the heart of the Broadway tourist district have been converted into emergency shelters through contracts the city inked with the Hotel Association of New York City,” the Post reported. “Housing Works was awarded a $13.4 million contract to aid migrants at the City View Inn, at 3317 Greenpoint Avenue in Long Island. A worker answering the phone there Tuesday said the City View has been a shelter for ‘nearly two years’ and is still not taking reservations for lodging."
The NYC shelter system is currently housing 63,900 illegal migrants across 210 locations.
Trying to deflect blame, Mayor Adams' chief of staff, Camille Joseph Varlack said “This is not a New York City issue or even a United States issue, this is a worldwide issue. We’ve had the opportunity to speak to other cities who are expecting and experiencing migration and we expect that to continue between wars and climate change and all the other issues.”
If the Democrats continue their open border policy, things in NYC will shockingly get worse and much more expensive.
