The Department of Justice picked another special counsel Friday to investigate former President Donald Trump over allegations he improperly stored classified material at his home in Palm Beach, Florida.

“It is in the public interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution based on recent developments, including [Trump’s] announcement that he is a candidate for president in the next election and the sitting president’s stated intention to be a candidate as well,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The DOJ released more information on the subject after Garland’s announcement, confirming Jack Smith will be appointed as special counsel.

“The pace of the investigations will not pause or flag under my watch. I will exercise independent judgment and will move the investigations forward expeditiously and thoroughly to whatever outcome the facts and the law dictate,” Smith said.
