The mysterious disappearance of 33-year-old mother of three Sheylla Gutierrez took a disturbing turn after her husband, Jossimar Cabrera, told authorities that she had been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the New York Post reports. Sheylla was first reported missing four days before her body was discovered in the Angeles National Forest. While her spouse insisted that ICE had arrested her, recent security footage has raised doubts about this explanation, indicating a possibly darker reality behind her disappearance.

Ring camera footage later revealed Cabrera pulling a large, fabric-wrapped object from his home shortly before she was discovered dead in the woods. Cabrera, 36, had reportedly fled to Peru with the couple’s children.

The case remains suspicious while, according to The Post, “Guitierrez’s family told ABC7 that her husband Jossimar Cabrera, who is now suspected of killing her, initially gave several excuses regarding her whereabouts — including that ICE had taken her, that she left with another man and that she’s been in an accident — before fleeing the country with their children.”

Footage obtained by KTLA on Tuesday appears to show Cabrera being detained by Peruvian authorities, though it remains uncertain whether he will be extradited. U.S. officials said that if he is returned, he will likely face murder charges. The children are reportedly safe in Peru and are staying with their maternal grandmother. Gutierrez’s mother told the outlet that her daughter had previously reported her husband for domestic violence in Peru, and during their last conversation, she said she planned to file a report against him in the United States.
