The Democratic Party keeps swearing Joe Biden is just fine. Then he gets in front of a microphone. At the Maryland Democratic Party’s “Fight Back and Win Summit” in Baltimore on Saturday night, the 83-year-old former president shouted, coughed, and mumbled his way through a pre-midterm hype speech — and when it was over, he couldn’t find his way off the stage, the Daily Wire reports.
The delivery hasn’t changed a bit since he left the White House in early 2025. Biden drifted between a quiet conversational tone and sudden, jarring bursts of yelling for no obvious reason. “It’s time to get up, dammit! Get up! Get up now!” he hollered at the crowd. “And continue this fight. So let’s get up and fight back, God … darn it!” This is the man the party insisted was “sharp as a tack.”
From there he wandered into a strange riff attacking President Trump over “vanity projects.” Biden rattled off a list — “tearing down the East Wing of the White House making room for his ballroom. Putting his name on the Kennedy Center. Building an arch in his own honor. Even hiring his own pool guy to fix the reflecting pool. Woah — what a loser.” He also took credit for an economy voters had spent his entire term telling pollsters they hated.
Then came the part everyone’s talking about. With the speech finished, Biden pointed his finger to the left, then swung it to the right, paused, and looked genuinely confused about which way to walk. Finally he simply turned his back on the audience and shuffled away from the lectern. Conservative reporter Breanna Morello, who was there, summed it up bluntly: he was “mumbling, coughing, yelling, cursing, and had to ask for instructions on how to exit the stage.”
If that sounds familiar, it should. Just days earlier, at the grand opening of Barack Obama’s presidential center in Chicago, Biden scanned the audience, asked aloud where his granddaughter was sitting, and then wandered off the stage. Two events, one week, the same painful pattern — and the same press corps that spent four years assuring Americans their eyes were lying to them.
This is the window into what the country was sold. For years the people closest to power gaslit voters about an obvious decline, then handed this man the nuclear codes and called anyone who noticed a liar. Now he’s the warm-up act for the midterms, telling Democrats to “get up and fight” while he can’t reliably find the way down a set of stairs. The party may want to fight back and win. Maybe start by being honest with the people you spent years deceiving.
