Democrats keep telling Americans that Republicans are the threat to democracy. Then one of their own candidates sits down at a televised forum, promises to “fire all Republicans” if elected, and signs off with a message to voters: “We have guns too.” Jaime West, a Democrat running for the Fayette County Council in eastern Indiana, delivered that performance on camera, Fox News reports.
The forum went off the rails when West was asked to name one decision she would make that constituents might find unpopular. Her answer: “Fire all Republicans.” She kept going. “I wouldn’t let them — I don’t even talk to them. I don’t like them,” she said, while also pledging not to raise taxes.
From there, West turned on what she called “MAGAs.” “Y’all did this to us. … You made this happen. This ICE coming into our communities, stealing people’s jobs,” she said. She allowed that “there are good Republicans out there,” but said “there’s these MAGAs who are just racist and aren’t very intelligent at all.” She also claimed, “The sheriff’s nephew threatened to blow my head off.”
Then came the closer. The moderator paused and asked West for a final message to voters. “We have guns too,” she said, as the moderator moved on to explaining how to vote in Indiana’s elections this year. Let that sink in. A candidate who had just complained about being threatened answered her own grievance with a line about guns.
Critics online weren’t sure what they were watching. Chaya Raichik of LibsOfTikTok wrote on X, “This is not a skit,” said West “appears to mumble and rant the entire time,” and asked whether she was intoxicated. Former litigator Viva Frei said the video first looked like a “skit [or] high school video project,” adding that “‘we have guns too’ after talking about firing all Republicans would ordinarily be disqualifying.”
The local sheriff didn’t buy her story either. It isn’t clear which sheriff West meant, but Zac Jones, who leads the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office where she is running, told Fox News Digital: “I don’t know Jaime West, and she obviously doesn’t know me. I have five nieces and zero nephews.” He added, “It’s a sad day when this is the best the Democrat Party can get to run for this important local office.” West could not immediately be reached for comment. She is running against Republican Gary Keener Jr.
This is a window into what happens when a party spends years telling its voters that half the country is racist and dangerous. Sooner or later somebody believes it enough to say it out loud, on camera, in a race for county council. Hoosiers deserve better than a candidate whose plan is to fire the other side and whose last word to voters is about guns.
