With the overwhelming rise in migrants arriving in New York City, many Asian-Americans are beginning to shift politically towards the Republican party according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.
The NYC area, particularlyAsian Americans, for a long time has been heavily Democrat-leaning but because of the surge of migrants flooding the city, the community has shown much support for Republicans in local races. Over 100,000 migrants have arrived in the city because of the failed Biden administration policies and the Asian-American community has let their voices be heard. Many Chinese protestors have criticized city officials for closing down Sunset Park in order to house the migrants which in turn affects their children because they have very limited places to socialize.
According to the President of the Asian Wave Alliance, Yiatin Chu, “It’s the number one thing that is front and center for voters as we’re heading to poll sites.”
“It appears that the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers of every stripe think that the recent influx is a serious problem that the state needs to address,” said Steve Greenburg of Siena polls. A new poll recently showed just how concerned many New Yorkers were because of the massive influx of migrants.
According to Yang Tan, a Republican candidate for City Council, she would represent a large Asian-America district and many are growing concerned with how wide open the southern border is. Even the Democratic candidate for City Council, Susan Zhuang stated she disagrees with the park being used for migrant housing and believes it shouldn’t be the priority of the city to “make up for federal failures.”
The park that was closed has affected many lives and the recreation it provided residents was invaluable. According to another resident Fanny Chen, the park was the only place for the community to meet and socialize, or in her case, to practice with her dance group. Now that everyday American’s are feeling the consequences of Biden’s disastrous border decisions, a political shift may be brewing in even the most liberal city.
