On Wednesday, President Biden reiterated is desire to ban all assault weapons in the United States before the new Congress is seated next month.

Many lawmakers have shown little desire to ban assault weapons in recent months but according to Biden, he would like to put greater pressure on lawmakers to change their minds and get something done before Democrats lose control of the House.

At a recent vigil for victims of gun violence Biden said, “We did it before. We did it, and guess what? It worked … We can do it again.”

The vigil at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Washington was organized by the “Newtown Action Alliance,” which began after the tragic shooting in 2012 at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut where 20 first-grade students and 6 adults were killed by a gunman using an assault rifle.

A student of Sandy Hook who survived the attack, Jackie Hegarty said at the vigil “Guns are now the number one killer of children in America, and we are asked to be brave while hiding under our desks in our classrooms, while too many elected officials lack the courage to pass common-sense laws to save our lives.”
Biden pushed through a bipartisan law in June which included provisions helping states keep guns out of the hands of those who are a danger to themselves or others but has now decided to go further and push through a complete ban.
This past November, Biden said “I’m going to try to get rid of assault weapons” and would “start counting the votes” to see if it was possible to get passed before the current Congress ends on Jan 3rd.
