House Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota won the Republican nomination for Speaker of the House in a secret ballot Tuesday.

Emmer secured the nomination on the fifth vote.

The process will likely head to an official vote in the House of Representatives, where the candidate can afford just four defections from fellow Republicans assuming all the Democrats vote for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

At least 25 Republicans voted against Emmer in the last ballot.

Former President Donald Trump immediately condemned the nomination of Emmer on Truth Social.

“Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake,” said Trump.

This is a developing story.
