The party that lectures America about “norms” just handed its Maine Senate nomination to a man now admitting he kicked down a door and beat another man bloody. Democratic nominee Troy Jackson — the party’s replacement for the imploded Graham Platner — acknowledged the violent 1988 episode after a newly surfaced police report detailed it, telling Fox News Digital: “I took responsibility for it then, and I take responsibility for it now.”
The Fort Kent Police Department report, first obtained by the Bangor Daily News, describes Jackson showing up at a Fort Kent home shortly before 2 a.m. on March 12, 1988. After an occupant told him to leave, Jackson allegedly “kicked the door in,” grabbed a man by the throat and swung at him — striking his glasses and cutting his face. A handwritten witness statement says Jackson warned the man to “stay away from Lana Pelletier or else.”
It gets worse. According to the report, Pelletier — Jackson’s longtime partner to this day — told an officer that Jackson had pushed her after the confrontation and that she planned to seek “cease harassment papers.” Pelletier now disputes that account, saying she doesn’t remember making those statements and calling them “not accurate.” The paper found no record she ever sought such an order, and a surviving court summary shows Jackson settled the case by agreeing to pay the man $50.
“Nearly 40 years ago, when I was 19 years old, I got into a fight with another man,” Jackson said, insisting he has “never been violent with my partner Lana, or any other woman” and that the incident “in no way reflects the man I am today.”
Senate Republicans aren’t letting it slide. “Disgusting and inexcusable,” the National Republican Senatorial Committee posted on X. “Troy Jackson is violent, unhinged, and has no place in the Senate.” The NRSC is now tagging Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Bernie Sanders and the rest of the party’s heavy hitters, daring them to condemn their own nominee in a race that could decide control of the Senate.
Remember, Jackson only got this nomination because Platner’s campaign collapsed in scandal — and Republicans are already branding him “Graham Platner 2.0.” Maine Democrats went back to the well and pulled up another mess. Jackson is challenging Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November, and Fort Kent’s town attorneys are now reviewing whether the original 1988 records can be released.
This is a window into what happens when a party burns through its bench so fast it stops vetting anyone at all. The self-appointed guardians of decency picked a nominee with a door-smashing, throat-grabbing police report in his past — and their answer so far is silence. Mainers deserve better than a coin flip between scandals.
