The Texas Republican is calling on his GOP colleagues to blow up the filibuster and force through President Trump’s top-priority SAVE America Act, declaring that Democrats have already destroyed the traditional rules of Senate warfare. According to The New York Post, Cornyn wrote that when reality changes, leaders must adapt or watch America’s elections remain vulnerable to fraud.
This is exactly the kind of bold leadership Trump’s movement demands. For too long, Republicans have played by gentleman’s rules while Democrats wage scorched-earth politics. Cornyn gets it: “Democrats are weaponizing the Senate’s rules to block the SAVE America Act, defund the Department of Homeland Security and hurt the American people — all to spite President Donald Trump.” The SAVE Act requires simple documentary proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. Common sense stuff that Democrats oppose because, as Trump brilliantly pointed out, “if we get this, they probably won’t win an election for 50 years.”
The timing couldn’t be more critical. Trump has made election security his number-one priority heading into the midterms, and he’s absolutely right to threaten a legislative freeze until the Senate acts. The House already passed this common-sense bill, but it’s stalled thanks to universal Democratic obstruction. Cornyn’s proposed “talking filibuster” would force senators to actually hold the floor instead of hiding behind procedural games, allowing the SAVE Act to pass with just 51 votes once opponents yield.
Sure, Majority Leader Thune says “the votes aren’t there” among Republicans to change the rules. But that’s exactly the kind of defeatist thinking that got us into this mess. Cornyn understands what’s at stake: “The Democrats’ recklessness and radicalism have changed the landscape. On these critical issues, at this critical hour, the old procedures no longer align with the core American principles we must defend.” It’s time for the GOP to stop bringing knives to gunfights and start delivering the election security victories Trump and the American people demand.
