Incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani stunned many New Yorkers this week when he vowed to stop his predecessor’s crackdown on homeless camps throughout the city.

“If you are not connecting homeless New Yorkers to the housing that they so desperately need, then you cannot deem anything you’re doing to be a success,” Mamdani told reporters.

“It’s as if it is a natural part of living in the city,” he added, claiming the issue is “a political choice being made time and time again.”

According to multiple studies, at least 350,000 homeless people currently reside in the Five Boroughs. 132,000 use city shelters on a frequent basis.
