Hillary Clinton is known for her pantsuits, and after all these years she feels the world needs to know the reasoning by her not so fashionable, fashion. Clinton said she was sexualized by “suggestive” photos taken of her during her time as first lady when her husband, Bill Clinton, was President of the United States.

Speaking in an interview with her daughter Chelsea to CBS Sunday Morning, Clinton said she was visiting Brazil on a state visit in 1995 wearing a cream skirt suit, and photographers took photos “from below.”

It was at that moment that the skirt suit was forever turned into a pantsuit. “I was sitting on a couch, and the press was let in. there were a bunch of them shooting up” Hillary said, adding that her underwear appeared to be visible. The photos were later used in ads for Brazil’s Duloren lingerie.

“All of a sudden the White House gets alerted to these billboards that show me sitting down — I thought my legs were together — but the way it’s shot, it’s sort of suggestive,” Clinton, 74, added. “And then I also began to have the experience of having photographers all the time. I’d be on a stage, I’d be climbing stairs — and they’d be below me. I just couldn’t deal with it, so I started wearing pants.”

“That’s so creepy. So creepy” daughter Chelsea, 42, chimed in. At the time, Clinton’s press secretary commented “In the interest of good taste and good sense we have no comment.”

The director for the agency behind the controversial ad only had this to say: “We want to say that daring women don’t mind letting their panties be seen.” Speaking of daring women, the timing of Hillary and Chelsea’s interview must not be overlooked.

On Friday, Hillary Clinton and daughter Chelsea launch an Apple TV+ series based on the book they co-authored, The Book of Gutsy Women. It is a docuseries in which the two sit down with women they consider to be ‘trailblazers’ and ‘gutsy’ women such as Dr. Jane Goodall, Amy Schumer and Megan Thee Stallion.
