Rama Duwaji, wife of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, is drawing comparisons to Hunter Biden in the art world, according to U.S. political artist Jon McNaughton, Fox News reports. McNaughton suggests that, like Hunter Biden, Duwaji’s art career benefits largely from her political connections and rising profile rather than solely on artistic merit. Duwaji, who graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Communication Arts and Design program, has been sharing mostly black-and-white politically charged sketches on social media, which McNaughton describes as resembling ‘student sketchbook’ ideas, a conclusion he said was based on observation, not insult.

Duwaji’s outspoken political posts, including sharing controversial figures and causes related to Palestine, contribute to her recognition but also stir controversy. McNaughton concluded that political art often functions as a reflection of the artist’s beliefs, and while it may seem like propaganda to some, it is a historical tool used to influence or reflect political movements.

This dynamic where an artist’s political ties and identity drive market success is commonly seen in today’s art scene, giving rise to debates about the genuine value of such politically infused artwork versus its promotional backing.

Duwaji’s art incorporates modern illustrative, woodcut, Gothic, and Art Nouveau styles, according to McNaughton. Some works address politically sensitive topics, such as a sketch of Palestinian-Algerian activist Mahmoud Khalil, whom she criticized being detained by ICE, and another reflecting themes similar to the George Floyd “knee on the neck” imagery tied to Black Lives Matter protests.

McNaughton notes that in the art world, identity and political messaging strongly influence an artist’s marketability. He contends that Duwaji will be promoted because of her status and the political messages in her work, similar to how Hunter Biden’s abstract paintings gained notoriety and sold for high prices—some reportedly up to $500,000—due to his connections rather than critical acclaim. Hunter Biden has said his art channels his energy positively and keeps him away from destructive influences.

According to Fox News, Duwaji and Mamdani connected on the dating app Hinge in 2022. They got engaged in October 2024 and celebrated their engagement in Dubai. The two later married in a civil ceremony in New York City in early 2025, followed by a three-day Indian wedding celebration in Uganda that August.
