Hundreds of transgender federal prisoners say they fear what could be their fate following a recent executive order from President Donald Trump. Trump mandated that the placement of inmates will be based on their biological sex rather than gender identity. The move has sparked urgent legal efforts to challenge the policy, with advocates warning it could endanger transgender prisoners.

“This is going to create an incredibly dangerous environment,” said attorney Moira Meltzer-Cohen in an interview with DailyMail.com. Meltzer-Cohen represents Donna Langan, a transgender woman and federal inmate who transitioned while serving a life sentence for bank robbery as part of the neo-Nazi Aryan Republican Army.

Meltzer-Cohen expressed deep concern for her client and other transgender individuals being relocated to male prisons, warning that such transfers could lead to violence. “There’s a very real fear of a bloodbath if this goes through,” she said.

The executive order, signed on Trump’s first full day in office, asserts the government will only recognize two biological sexes—male and female—for the purposes of federal policy. It specifically impacts the designation of “intimate spaces,” such as prisons, shelters, and bathrooms, which will now be segregated solely based on biological sex rather than gender identity.

The executive order also includes other policy changes, such as rolling back federal funding for gender-affirming care, including transition services for transgender individuals. It further requires federal agencies to use the term “sex” instead of “gender” in all official language and emphasizes eliminating funding for initiatives promoting “gender ideology.”
