The Senate has passed the Laken Riley Act in a 64-35 vote, pushing forward President Trump’s immigration agenda. Named after a Georgia nursing student tragically murdered by an undocumented immigrant, the bill mandates Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain and potentially deport undocumented individuals arrested for a range of crimes, now expanded to include assaulting law enforcement and offenses causing death or serious injury.
The bill garnered bipartisan support, with 12 Democrats joining Republicans in favor of the legislation. Critics, however, argue the act undermines due process and risks sweeping up nonviolent offenders, fueling concerns of mass deportations. While amendments proposed by Senate Democrats were largely rejected, the House must now reapprove the bill due to Senate changes.
Expected to gain support in the House, the Laken Riley Act is poised to become the first law signed under Trump’s renewed push for stricter immigration policies.
