‘General Hospital’ actress Nancy Lee Grahn is reportedly stirring division by publicly ridiculing country superstar and “American Idol” icon Carrie Underwood for performing at President Donald Trump’s inauguration last year, Fox News reports. The outburst has drawn widespread criticism for its intolerance and hypocrisy.
Grahn took to Threads on Thursday, announcing that she would “refuse to even look” at Underwood as the singer appeared with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote the upcoming season of American Idol. The post instantly drew backlash for its tone, which many described as petty and unnecessarily hostile.
“See ya next week @jimmykimmel. I refuse to even look at @carrieunderwood,” Grahn wrote — a statement that offered no reasoning beyond political spite. Fellow left-leaning celebrity Kathy Griffin, who once posed for a photo holding a prop designed to look like the bloody, severed head of President Donald Trump, quickly joined in, claiming there was “no love for MAGA Carrie.” Both comments reinforced the perception that political conformity has reached an almost absurd level in Hollywood.
After the post went viral, Grahn backtracked slightly, insisting she meant no offense toward Kimmel. “Truth matters,” she wrote defensively. “I LOVE Jimmy Kimmel & watch him every night. I would never 'slam' him. I simply said I would watch him next week because I didn’t want to look at Carrie Underwood (for obvious reasons) who was his guest that night.” Yet Grahn never clarified what those “obvious reasons” were, leaving critics to note that attacking a fellow artist based on speculation and political assumptions hardly reflects moral high ground.
This isn’t Grahn’s first attempt to weaponize political differences against Underwood. In a separate post last month, she labeled the Grammy-winning star “MAGA,” citing an old clip of Underwood mocking the Affordable Care Act website in 2013.
“I thought everyone knew Carrie Underwood was MAGA. She’s American all right, but certainly no Idol,” Grahn wrote — a jab that suggests more bitterness than substance.
While Grahn’s comments seem rooted in Hollywood’s echo chamber, Underwood herself has consistently stayed out of partisan conflict. Known for her professionalism and grace, the country singer accepted the honor of performing America the Beautiful at Trump’s 2025 inauguration, saying it was an opportunity for unity rather than division.
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said at the time. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Her performance, which was lauded online after a sound glitch forced her to finish the song a capella, exemplified the very qualities — composure, patriotism, and professionalism — that stand in stark contrast to Grahn’s social-media grandstanding. For many fans, Grahn’s sniping only underscored the widening cultural divide between Hollywood activism and genuine artistry.
