An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper became an unexpected hero after helping deliver a newborn on the side of a southwest Oklahoma highway. Trooper Tyler Shelby had been dispatched to assist with traffic control as an ambulance rushed to reach a woman in active labor—until he suddenly realized the situation was unfolding right in front of him.

Shelby spotted a black Chevrolet Camaro pulled over with its passenger door open and found the mother-to-be seated inside. As he approached to reassure her that medical help was minutes away, she delivered an urgent update of her own: the baby wasn’t waiting.

With no time to spare, Shelby immediately stepped in. It was his first time assisting in a birth, but the training kicked in, and within moments he safely delivered the newborn. He later joked that all he really did was “play catch.”

The ambulance arrived shortly afterward and transported both mother and baby—named Finley—to a nearby hospital. According to the Highway Patrol, both are healthy and doing well.

Officials praised Shelby’s quick response, noting that troopers are trained for medical emergencies even if they don’t encounter them every day. They congratulated the family and celebrated the heartwarming outcome on what began as an ordinary patrol shift.
