President Donald Trump revealed during his State of the Union address Tuesday night that Team USA men’s hockey goalie Connor Hellebuyck will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom following his historic role in securing Olympic gold at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Sunday.
Hellebuyck delivered an unbelievable performance in the championship matchup against Canada, stopping 41 shots and keeping the contest deadlocked at 1-1 to push the game into overtime. His efforts backstopped the Americans to their first Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey since the legendary “Miracle on Ice” team in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
The dramatic finish came when Jack Hughes buried the overtime winner past Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington. One of the most critical moments of the game occurred in the second period, when Hellebuyck made a stunning save on a wide-open chance from Devon Toews.
Reacting quickly, he spun to his right and managed to block the puck with only his stick, preserving the tie. Without that stop — and numerous others throughout the night — the outcome could have easily shifted in Canada’s favor.
Following the victory, United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth jokingly bestowed his former title, Secretary of Defense, upon Hellebuyck in recognition of the goaltender’s dominant performance.
The gold medal win marked a historic achievement for the United States and cemented Hellebuyck’s place in Olympic hockey lore.
