President Donald Trump has signed an executive order designed to eliminate federal taxpayer benefits for illegal immigrants. According to Fox News, the order instructs all federal agencies to identify and correct any federally funded programs that provide financial benefits to individuals living in the country illegally. The order is also intended to prevent federal funds from being used to support sanctuary policies at the state and local levels or to otherwise assist illegal immigration. Enhanced eligibility verification processes will be mandated to ensure that federal benefits are not improperly distributed to illegal immigrants.

The executive order cites the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-193) (PRWORA) which “generally prohibits illegal aliens from obtaining most taxpayer-funded benefits. Title IV of the PRWORA states that it is national policy that “aliens within the Nation’s borders not depend on public resources to meet their needs,” and that “[i]t is a compelling government interest to remove the incentive for illegal immigration provided by the availability of public benefits.”

The White House emphasizes that this move underscores Trump’s commitment to prioritizing public health benefits for American citizens, particularly those with disabilities and veterans. A White House fact sheet contends that the increase in illegal immigration has strained resources, diverting dollars and essential services away from American citizens.

The order recalls “in the decades since the passage of the PRWORA, numerous administrations have acted to undermine the principles and limitations directed by the Congress through that law. Over the last 4 years, in particular, the prior administration repeatedly undercut the goals of that law, resulting in the improper expenditure of significant taxpayer resources.”

According to Fox News, “The White House noted that the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimated that American taxpayers spend at least $182 billion annually to cover the costs incurred by the presence of 20 million illegal immigrants and their children. That figure includes $66.5 billion in federal expenses and an additional $115.6 billion in state and local funds.”

In keeping with his promise to the American people, President Trump wrote, “My Administration will uphold the rule of law, defend against the waste of hard-earned taxpayer resources, and protect benefits for American citizens in need, including individuals with disabilities and veterans.”

This order aligns with Trump’s broader efforts to crack down on illegal immigration through increased law enforcement and other measures. The strain illegal immigration has put on America since it skyrocketed under the Biden administration has led to hardships in several sectors of American life, and the financial burden of supporting illegal immigrants has been among the top concerns Americans have had, contributing to their decision to elect Trump to make change. This executive order reflects Trump’s promise to put Americans first and not reward illegal immigrants with benefits meant for Americans.
