The United States, in a show of force, flew two B-52 bombers over the Middle East on Thursday because American and Saudi officials were concerned with an imminent threat to Saudi Arabia, according to a Defense Department official.

Defense Department officials believe Tehran has plans to attack Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure and officials are also monitoring an attack from Iran on Iraq where thousands of U.S. troops and personnel are stationed.

Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia are high because officials in the Iranian government believe Saudi Arabia is helping anti-government protesters in an attempt to destabilize the government according to a DoD official who requested to remain anonymous.  Protests in Iran spiked when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died after being arrested by Iran’s morality police protesting the strict dress code for women.

A second DoD official said ” It should be no surprise to us that there is some part of the Iranian apparatus that thinks now is a great time to launch more attacks on the region. That is the playbook of this regime.”

The DoD officials confirmed alert levels in the U.S and Saudi militaries were raised last week and shortened the response time of Patriot missile defense systems stationed in the region.

The Wall Street Journal reported the U.S. and Saudi militaries raised alert levels because of possible threats.

The first DoD official raised additional concern in the region due to Iran transferring drones and ballistic missiles to Russia to aid their ongoing war in Ukraine.

The show of force by the United States with the bomber flight in the Middle East occurred within hours after the Israeli government launched airstrikes on an Iranian weapons transfer along the Iraq-Syria border.

The head of U.S. Central Command Michael Kurilla said in a statement announcing the bomber flight, “this Bomber Task Force mission demonstrates our commitment to regional security and the collective capabilities of our military partners in the region. CENTCOM has the ability to very quickly put a significant amount of combat power in the air alongside our partners. We can do the same on the ground and at sea to meet any challenge decisively.”

According to the second DoD official, “the Iranians have demonstrated that they can walk and chew gum at the same time. They can mobilize an extensive internal repression apparatus to deal with the protests and they can continue to foment instability abroad.”
