California’s Democrats have been caught running a staggering $11 billion shadow welfare system that funnels taxpayer money directly to illegal immigrants — and the brazenness of it should make your blood boil.
A devastating new report from City Journal’s Christopher Rufo exposes the full scale of the scam, and Breitbart reports that the Golden State has quietly built a parallel benefits apparatus that gives illegal migrants free healthcare, free food, housing, legal assistance, education, smartphones, and even free car insurance — all on your dime.
Rufo visited four state offices in Southern California, and every single one of them confirmed that illegal aliens are permitted to sign up for public assistance programs. He calls it “a shadow welfare system” that hands tax dollars over to noncitizens. “Local officials were remarkably transparent,” Rufo wrote. “In Glendale, we spoke to a welfare officer about California’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI), a state-funded alternative to Supplemental Security Income that provides monthly cash assistance to low-income noncitizens who are elderly or disabled.”
The numbers are jaw-dropping. According to Rufo, “a family of five in California with two illegal-alien parents, two U.S.-born children, and one illegal-alien grandparent can receive public services worth more than $100,000 per year.” That’s six figures in taxpayer-funded benefits for a single family that has no legal right to be in this country. Of course they did.
How did Sacramento pull this off? By creating smaller, local programs designed to skirt federal rules that prohibit tax dollars from going to noncitizens. Democrats in the state legislature designated illegals as “permanently residing under color of law” — a bureaucratic sleight of hand to extend benefits in the face of federal prohibitions. They even made illegals eligible for state-subsidized car insurance “regardless of immigration status,” so they can drive around without getting arrested for being uninsured.
And California isn’t alone. Similar policies are cropping up in Illinois, New York, and other blue states, but California’s waste is by far the costliest at $11 billion and counting.
This is a window into the real Democratic immigration strategy: import millions of people illegally, put them on the government payroll, and create a permanent dependent class that will vote to keep the gravy train running. It’s a Ponzi scheme dressed up as compassion — and American taxpayers are the ones left holding the bill.
