The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into leaders of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement for possible misuse of donor funds, following the organization’s massive influx of donations during the 2020 George Floyd protests.
According to the Associated Press, federal investigators in recent weeks have issued subpoenas and executed at least one search warrant as part of an ongoing inquiry into the Black Lives Matter Global Foundation — the primary organization behind the movement — along with other left-leaning activist groups connected to the 2020 racial justice demonstrations.
This investigation, initiated under the Trump administration, comes after years of criticism directed at BLM leaders over accusations of financial mismanagement and self-enrichment. Co-founder Patrisse Cullors, in particular, has faced backlash for allegedly using movement funds for personal gain, even as the organization’s revenue has sharply declined in recent years.
While no criminal charges have yet been filed, the federal probe is reportedly part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to scrutinize leftist activist organizations. The move follows the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which officials have cited as a catalyst for renewed attention on political violence.
Trump administration officials have vowed to take a tougher stance against what they describe as “leftist political extremism” and the funding networks that sustain it.
Black Lives Matter rose to prominence during the nationwide protests in the summer of 2020, which erupted after George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The protests — which sometimes devolved into riots — caused more than $1 billion in property damage and were followed by a notable rise in violent crime across major cities.
Amid the unrest, BLM’s calls to “defund the police” became a defining and controversial slogan, pushing for reduced police budgets and reallocation of funds to social programs. The Trump administration has since broadened its focus to include federal actions against leftist militants associated with Antifa and protests targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
